Meteomatics – Improved Weather Models with FLARM
Meteomatics is a leading provider of high‑quality weather models. The EURO1K model delivers an exceptional resolution of 1 km spatially and 15 minutes temporally. Forecasts are highly reliable up to 72 hours into the future. To further enhance the EURO1K model, Meteomatics operates a network of measurement sites: currently nine in Switzerland, with another 30 in Norway coming soon. To collect atmospheric data, a drone is launched several times a day and ascends to an altitude of up to 6 km.
To avoid conflicts with manned aircraft, Meteomatics uses an Alert Zone Generator (AZN) from FLARM. The Alert Zone Generator consists of a specially configured PowerFLARM Fusion device. The geometry and structure of the alert zone are broadcast regularly via radio. Approaching aircraft receive these broadcasts and display the information in the cockpit, informing the pilot of the zone’s type and extent. The status and configuration of the alert zone can be verified at any time through the integrated web app (Hub).
Thanks to the Alert Zone Generator, Meteomatics operates its drone fleet safely and fully autonomously in both controlled and uncontrolled airspace. Operations are conducted under the SORA model and approved by the Swiss Federal Office of Civil Aviation (BAZL).
Meteomatics weather forecasts can be accessed via app (Google, iOS) or through the API. PowerFLARM Fusion with the Alert Zone Generator extension can be ordered directly from us.
