Emerging regulations in many countries require unmanned aircraft (also known as drones, UAV, UAS, RPAS, or r/c models) to be identified remotely by electronic means, in combination with a government-operated UAS registry database. The benefits include public security, safety, and accountability.
The principle of remote electronic identification (EID) is that a cooperative UAS regularly broadcasts a unique identifier and the current three-dimensional position through a radio frequency message. This then enables authorized parties to detect, identify, locate and track UAS anywhere at any time and at a reasonable distance, also in the absence of network connectivity or other infrastructure. Reliable electronic identification is also essential for airspace and traffic management, be it UTMS or a safe integration into current airspace used by manned aviation. Electronic identification is a key pillar in SESAR‘s U-space foundation services.
The only open standard referenced by authorities globally is the “FLARM UAS Electronic ID” standard specifying the technical implementation. It is proven as it builds on the existing FLARM protocol layers with tens of thousands of airborne installations around the world. It is designed to be simple to implement and the required hardware inexpensive to be built by professional manufacturers in volumes. The implementation does neither require a license from or a royalty to FLARM Technology Ltd.
